Camp Gallipoli

What’s going on: Camp Gallipoli is a once in a lifetime opportunity for all Australians and New Zealanders to come together on the 100th anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli to sleep out under the stars as the original Anzacs did 100 years ago. The event will involve eating great tucker, watching historic footage on huge screens, seeing iconic entertainers live on stage and camping in authentic swags will in itself create history. In addition the Dawn Service honouring those who have fallen will be something you and your family will never forget.

Tip: Tents are not permitted, it’s a swag only event.

 

Old Melbourne Gaol: Whisky Pop-Up Bar

What’s going on: After work drinks at Old Melbourne Gaol – that just sounds crazy. But no – the good folk at the National Trust Victoria are unlocking the prison doors to allow the public in for a pop-up whisky bar. Come along for whisky cocktails, food from Hoy Pinoy and access to all areas of this historic Gaol where some of Australia’s most infamous crims were locked up. I’ll drink to that!

Tip: There will also be intimate master classes on offer where you can learn from experts. These classes cost an additional $10 in advance (if bought with an admission ticket) or $15 on the day if space is still available.

 

Shrine of Remembrance Dawn Service

What’s going on: It is the centenary of the ANZACs, so if there was ever a time to commit to getting out of bed before the crack of dawn to attend this important and moving ceremony – this is it! The service takes place in the picturesque surrounds of the Shrine of Remembrance and is a really worthwhile activity.

Tip: It is advised to arrive and assemble on the Shrine forecourt between 4am and 5am.

 

ANZAC Day at Mail Exchange Hotel

What’s going on: The Mail Exchange Hotel will be open from 7am for brekkie for anyone who attends the dawn service, then the rounds of two-up start at 12pm. Tip your hat to the service men and women of this country and let your hair down with a good old fashioned pub celebration of ANZAC Day!

 

ANZAC Day At Flemmington Racecourse

What’s going on: Join the VRC in their traditional tribute to the courageous men and women who have served our nation. In addition to the eight-race program, a ceremony will take place in the Mounting Yard to commemorate the centenary and acknowledge the roles horses and jockeys played in the war. Current and Returned servicemen and women are welcome to participate in the formal proceedings.

Tip: The VRC will be offering a first free drink shout at any bar on course for current and Returned servicemen and women between 1 and 2pm.

 

Essendon Vs Collingwood Anzac Day clash

What’s going on: The Anzac Day Clash is an annual match between The Bombers and The Magpies, which has been running for 2 decades in its current form. Enjoy the awesome atmosphere if you are lucky enough to have tickets for the G, if not, pull up a bar stool at your local and catch the match on-screen over a pint or two.
